The final legacy player: dupreeh's journey to 18 Majors

Take a walk down memory lane and delve into the storied career of the last remaining player to have attended every single CS:GO Major.

Many players have come and gone in the nine years of CS:GO Majors. Some have risen to the challenge and captured one of the game’s most coveted titles, some had to satisfy themselves by deep playoff runs, and some are still just dreaming of getting their stickers in the game.

But at the IEM Rio Major, one player remains with the ultimate achievement — playing at every single Major.

His name is Peter "⁠dupreeh⁠" Rasmussen.

dupreeh stands alone with 18 consecutive Major appearances

Following the conclusion of the 17th Major, PGL Major Antwerp, both Richard "⁠shox⁠" Papillon and Andreas "⁠Xyp9x⁠" Højsleth also held the rare distinction alongside dupreeh. The Frenchman's Major streak came to an end after his Apeks side failed to qualify for the Europe RMR, while Xyp9x missed out on the top-24 stage for the first time in his career after Astralis were knocked out of the Major-qualifying tournament. As the first Brazilian Major in history fast approaches, we relive the journey and legacy the Danish rifler has left on the grandest stage of them all.

Early success and the semi-final curse

dupreeh began his Global Offensive career with Danish side 3DMAX, but joined CPH Wolves in March 2013. The Danish side took part in the first-ever CS:GO Major, DreamHack Winter, where they reached the playoffs and finished in 5-8th place. dupreeh showed flashes of brilliance at the Major, most notably on Inferno during his team's quarter-final bout with one of the tournament favorites in VeryGames. He was the driving factor in CPH Wolves's map win as he topped the scoreboard with 25 kills and a 1.54 rating which sent the series to a decider and proved that a humble Danish squad had what it took to make the French giants bleed.

His tenure with the team also gave birth to a now-legendary partnership with Nicolai "⁠device⁠" Reedtz and Xyp9x, with the trio later going on to achieve unmatched success throughout their careers and earn the distinction as three of the most decorated Global Offensive players of all time.

dupreeh achieved back-to-back top-four placings as part of Dignitas

The next chapter in dupreeh's career was with the same core of players, but at Dignitas where he would attain back-to-back 3-4th place finishes at the first two Majors of 2014, EMS One Katowice and ESL One Cologne. He was one of the most proficient players on Dignitas in Cologne and finished with a 1.13 overall rating by the tournament's conclusion, second only to device's 1.14. At 2014's third and final Major, DreamHack Winter, the Danes reached the playoffs but suffered a quarter-final exit at the hands of Natus Vincere where dupreeh would be a shining light amongst his struggling teammates.

The Major in Sweden marked the final Valve-sanctioned competition dupreeh and the rest of his team would attend under the Dignitas banner as the five-man lineup was signed by TSM in February 2015. Led by Finn "⁠karrigan⁠" Andersen, the team picked up where they left off and continued their streak of Major playoff appearances. Their best campaign would come at ESL One Cologne 2015, where they took home a 3-4th place finish and, on an individual level, dupreeh would shine as one of the highest-rated players during their group stage game against Renegades and their quarter-final series versus Kinguin. Despite the success TSM garnered at Majors and other top-tier events, one thing always eluded dupreeh and company — a spot in the grand final of a Major.

While quarter-final finishes at both ESL One Katowice and DreamHack Open Cluj-Napoca and a 3-4th place result at ESL One Cologne were exceptional results in their own right, TSM's constant inability to reach the Major grand final created the perception of the Danish side's 'semi-final curse'. This would carry over to the early days of Astralis, an organization established in 2016 by the same five-man squad that previously competed for TSM.

Building an unparalleled legacy

Astralis' first few outings weren't anything remarkable as the Danes continued to struggle when it came to the Major's knockout stage. dupreeh once again came close to a grand final appearance at MLG Columbus, but Astralis ultimately fell short to Natus Vincere in the semi-final. Their playoff run was even shorter-lived at ESL One Cologne after losing to Virtus.pro in the quarters, although it's worth noting that Astralis weren't at their full strength.

Markus "⁠Kjaerbye⁠" Kjærbye was brought in by the Danes in May 2016, but was ineligible to participate in the event with Astralis having qualified for the EU Minor with Dignitas — leading them to field Lukas "⁠gla1ve⁠" Rossander as a stand-in. dupreeh also missed the playoffs for the first time in his career in Cologne due to an emergency procedure caused by appendicitis, which forced the team's coach Danny "⁠zonic⁠" Sørensen to take his place for the rest of the way.

The year may not have been what dupreeh was hoping for in terms of his Major aspirations, but that all changed as the Danish rifler and his crew entered 2017. Astralis, who now had gla1ve at the helm, not only broke their semi-final curse but lifted the Major trophy for the first time ever at the ELEAGUE Major. Their achievement was no small task either as the Danes faced off against Virtus.pro, an all-Polish group consisting of EMS One Katowice 2014 champions Wiktor "⁠TaZ⁠" Wojtas, Filip "⁠NEO⁠" Kubski, Paweł "⁠byali⁠" Bieliński, Janusz "⁠Snax⁠" Pogorzelski, and Jarosław "⁠pashaBiceps⁠" Jarząbkowski who were hungry for their second title.

Virtus.pro took home their map pick, Nuke, and claimed a 1-0 series advantage before Astralis struck back in map two with an extremely close 16-14 win and sent the grand final to a decider on Train. TaZ's crew looked poised to secure their second title after amassing an 8-1 lead early, but Astralis dug deep and turned their seven-round deficit into a 16-14 victory for the organization's first-ever Major championship. dupreeh played a vital part in the Danes' victorious run and finished as Astralis' second-highest rated player in what is regarded as one of the greatest Major grand finals of all time.

A return trip to the Major final didn't immediately present itself, however, as Astralis were eliminated in the semi-final at the PGL Major Krakow and even failed to make it past the New Legends Stage at the ELEAGUE Major in 2018. Their form took a big hit after device was unable to play for months due to illness, during which dupreeh served as the team's primary AWPer until the Boston Major. Directly after the ELEAGUE Major, Kjaerbye announced a shock departure from the team which left the Danes scrambling for a new rifler. His replacement in Emil "⁠Magisk⁠" Reif would prove more than capable of handling the challenge, which ushered in a new era for the organization.

The new-look Astralis, dubbed as 'Astralis 2.0', would embark on a massively successful run of form in which they scored consistent top-four placings and won both DreamHack Masters Marseille and ESL Pro League Season 7 Finals. Their victory in Marseille shot them atop the world ranking where they would go on to hold the No. 1 spot for 58 straight weeks, a record that has remained untouched to this day. Astralis quickly built momentum in the months leading up to the Major in London and carried it all the way to the competition's grand final, where they took home the FACEIT Major crown in dominant fashion over Natus Vincere.

dupreeh was once again at the forefront of the Danes' success by putting up the sixth-best rating of the entire tournament with 1.24. gla1ve and company finished the year strong by winning IEM Chicago and ESL Pro League Season 8 Finals and went into 2019 as the world's undisputed No. 1 team. Their previous accolades along with a hot start to the new year gave Astralis all the momentum in the world heading into IEM Katowice, but that's when tragedy struck for dupreeh. He revealed that his father had passed away just before the start of the Major's Legends Stage, but amidst all the challenges and emotions he played his heart out and was rewarded with a historic third Major championship, tying the record set by fnatic in 2015.

dupreeh would continue to make history with Astralis at StarLadder Berlin, where he would go on to win a record fourth Major title and third in a row. Only three other men stood alongside him on the top pedestal of the CS:GO world, teammates gla1ve, device, and Xyp9x which effectively made him one of the most successful players of all time. However, the following "online era" proved to be a massive roadblock for Astralis whose results were a far cry from their dominance in 2018 and 2019.

The Danes' struggles only piled up as device's departure in April 2021 signaled the end of an era not only for the organization but even for dupreeh and Xyp9x who'd been by his side for the past eight years. Astralis bowed out of the PGL Major Stockholm in the Legends Stage and, by the end of the year, dupreeh left the team he had built and conquered the competitive scene with for the last five years.

New beginnings and a glimpse of the future

The move to Vitality in January 2022 was a big one in dupreeh's career, and it may have just kept his Major record intact. The Franco-Danish mix was on a downhill trajectory after getting knocked out of the PGL Major Antwerp, but the addition of Lotan "⁠Spinx⁠" Giladi over the summer break breathed new life into the lineup. Vitality hoisted the ESL Pro League Season 16 trophy and days later qualified for the IEM Rio Challengers Stage through the Europe RMR, which officially confirmed dupreeh's attendance at an 18th consecutive CS:GO Major.

dupreeh acknowledged that while holding the record is a big individual achievement, he couldn't have done it without all of his teammates be it from the past or in the present. He also mentioned that despite the praise he has received from others, making it to all 18 Majors is simply what he expected from himself.

"It is kind of unreal, looking from the outside people are praising me a lot more than I do myself because making 18 out of 18 Majors is really really huge, but it is what I expected from myself," dupreeh emphasized. "Every time going into the Major I wanted to make sure I was participating."

dupreeh's Major legacy is one of a kind, and a testament to his longevity as a player which has perhaps been overlooked at times. gla1ve has been labeled the greatest IGL, device the most reliable sniper, and Xyp9x the clutch king, but out of the whole Astralis squad, dupreeh has ended up being the one with the best Major record of them all, boasting a perfect attendance record: 18 out of 18.

With generational talent Mathieu "⁠ZywOo⁠" Herbaut now on his team, rising star Spinx as the sidekick, and the support of those that know how to win in Dan "⁠apEX⁠" Madesclaire, Magisk, and zonic (8 Major wins across the three), dupreeh is heading into Rio not only as the last standing legacy Major player, but one that has a realistic chance to add another win one to his tally.
